You need a fine-textured, peat-based or coco-coir-based seed starting mix that holds together well when compressed. If your mix is too coarse or dry, the blocks will crumble; adding a little extra water to your mix usually creates the perfect consistency for a firm block.

Yes, it is designed to work with standard 1020 trays. You will need a mesh or hole-style tray for the blocks to sit on, and a solid, no-hole 1020 tray underneath to hold water for bottom-watering.

This specific model creates 3/4" blocks, which are intended for starting seeds or very young seedlings. If you need to pot up your plants later, you can use the cubic pin attachment to affix these smaller blocks into larger 2" soil blocks.

The zinc coating is highly durable and designed to resist corrosion from the moisture inherent in soil blocking. To keep it in top condition, simply wipe it clean and dry it off after you finish your planting session.
