Maxxis Ikon Wire Bead Tires

The wire bead uses a rigid steel wire to hold the tire onto the rim. While this makes the tire heavier and less foldable than tubeless-ready or folding-bead versions, it is highly durable and generally more affordable.

The Ikon is designed as a cross-country mountain bike tire, but its tread pattern is efficient enough for occasional pavement use. If you frequently ride on asphalt, expect the knobs to wear down faster than they would on dirt trails.

The Ikon excels on hard-pack and loose-over-hard terrain, but it is not a dedicated mud tire. Its low-profile knobs provide great speed, but they may struggle to clear thick, sticky mud compared to tires with more aggressive, widely spaced lugs.

This specific wire bead version is typically designed for use with an inner tube. While some riders attempt tubeless conversions on wire bead tires, it is not recommended by the manufacturer and may not provide a secure, airtight seal.

The Ikon is a versatile all-rounder that works well in both positions. Many riders prefer running it on the rear for its fast-rolling speed, sometimes pairing it with a more aggressive, knobby tire on the front for extra cornering grip.
