A bare-root division is a portion of a mature peony plant that is dug up and shipped without soil. This method is highly effective for peonies because it allows the plant to focus its energy on establishing a strong root system in your garden soil immediately after planting.

Fall is the ideal time to plant these divisions. Planting in the autumn gives the roots time to settle and establish themselves in the cooler soil before the plant breaks dormancy and begins its active growth cycle in the spring.

These peonies thrive in full sun, which means at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. While they can tolerate light shade, more sun generally results in stronger stems and a more prolific display of blooms.

Peonies are remarkably low-maintenance once established. Aside from ensuring they have well-draining soil and occasional watering during dry spells, they require very little intervention and will return reliably year after year.

Peonies are a long-term investment. While you might see some growth in the first spring, it often takes two to three years for a bare-root division to fully establish and produce its most impressive, lush floral display.
