Unlike standard irises that bloom once in the spring, this variety is genetically capable of producing a second flush of flowers. You can expect an initial bloom in early season, followed by a reliable return of color in late summer or early fall.

These irises require full sun, which means at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Without sufficient light, the plants may produce lush foliage but fail to set buds for the second bloom cycle.

Plant the rhizomes shallowly, with the top of the rhizome just barely covered by soil or even slightly exposed. Ensure the roots are spread downward into well-draining soil, as burying them too deeply can cause rot and inhibit flowering.

To support the late-season flush, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged after the first bloom fades. Deadheading spent flowers and providing a light application of balanced fertilizer after the spring bloom can also help the plant regain the energy needed for its second act.

German irises are generally considered deer and rabbit resistant because of their somewhat bitter, fibrous foliage. While no plant is entirely immune to hungry wildlife, they are a much safer bet for gardens prone to browsing than many other perennials.

For an immediate, high-impact display, plant the five rhizomes in a cluster spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart. This allows them enough room to multiply over the next few years without becoming overcrowded.
