The ideal time to plant is in early spring or fall when the soil is workable and temperatures are moderate. This allows the root system to establish itself before the heat of summer or the deep freeze of winter.

For a dense, continuous hedge, space your shrubs about 4 to 6 feet apart. This gives them enough room to mature and fill out without overcrowding, which can lead to poor air circulation.

Forsythia is relatively low-maintenance, but it benefits from pruning immediately after the spring blooms fade. Removing about one-third of the oldest stems encourages new growth and ensures a more vibrant display of flowers the following year.

While it can tolerate partial shade, you will get the best, most prolific golden blooms with full sun exposure. In deep shade, the plant may become leggy and produce significantly fewer flowers.

Bare root plants arrive without soil around the roots, which is a standard, healthy way to ship dormant shrubs. You should soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them, then plant immediately in moist, well-draining soil.

Forsythia is generally considered deer-resistant, as deer typically prefer other plants. However, no plant is completely deer-proof, especially if food sources are scarce in your area.
