Grandiflora roses are a cross between hybrid teas and floribundas. This means you get the best of both worlds: the large, elegant, single-stemmed blooms typical of hybrid teas, combined with the vigorous, repeat-blooming habit of floribundas.

Because the Queen Elizabeth rose has an upright, architectural habit, you should space them 3 to 4 feet apart. This ensures proper airflow, which is essential for keeping the foliage healthy and preventing fungal issues.

While this rose is happiest in the ground given its mature size of 5 to 6 feet, it can be grown in a very large container. Ensure the pot is at least 20 inches in diameter and depth to accommodate the root system, and be prepared to water it more frequently than a garden-planted rose.

The Queen Elizabeth rose is hardy in zones 5 through 9. If you live in the colder end of that range (zone 5), you should provide winter protection, such as mounding mulch around the base of the plant once the ground freezes.

Like most roses, it benefits from an annual pruning in early spring just as the buds begin to swell. Focus on removing dead or crossing canes to maintain its upright shape and encourage vigorous new growth for the season.

This variety is prized for its excellent vase life. When cut at the proper stage—just as the sepals are starting to pull back from the bud—you can expect the blooms to last a week or more indoors with regular water changes.
