A plug is a young seedling grown in a small, cylindrical container. This format encourages a dense, healthy root system, which makes the tree easier to plant and helps it establish itself in your soil more quickly than bare-root alternatives.

To create a dense privacy screen, space your seedlings about 10 to 12 feet apart. This allows enough room for the trees to mature into their full conical shape while still overlapping their branches to create a solid barrier.

These seedlings thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 through 7. If you live in an area with very hot, humid summers, they may struggle, as they prefer the cooler, drier climates typical of their native range.

Once established, Colorado Blue Spruce are quite low-maintenance. You will need to provide regular water during the first year or two, but after that, they are hardy and drought-tolerant, requiring little attention beyond occasional pruning if you want to shape them.

Growth rates vary based on soil quality and local climate, but these are generally considered slow-to-moderate growers. Expect them to grow roughly 12 to 24 inches per year once they are well-established in the ground.
