Unlike most fruits that you pick from the vine, ground cherries tell you when they are ready by dropping to the ground. Once the papery husks turn a light tan color and the fruit falls off the plant, they are ripe and ready to collect.

Because they grow to about 24–36 inches in height and spread, they are well-suited for large containers or raised beds. Just ensure your pot is at least 12–15 inches deep and provides full sun exposure.

They have a distinct, sweet-tart flavor that many people compare to a mix of pineapple, mango, and tomato. Because they are part of the tomato family, they offer a unique tropical brightness that works well in both fresh snacks and cooked desserts.

They are relatively straightforward, though they require patience. Seeds typically germinate in 7–14 days, and they thrive best when started indoors before the last frost to give them a head start on the warm season.

The husks are 100% compostable and serve as a natural protective shell for the fruit. Simply peel back the papery husk to reveal the fruit inside, which can be eaten raw immediately or used in your favorite recipes.

Aunt Molly's Ground Cherries are annuals, meaning they complete their life cycle in one season and will not return the following year. While they are prolific producers, they do not spread aggressively like perennial weeds.
