Plant Good Seed Luffa Gourd

If you want to eat the luffa, harvest the fruits while they are young, tender, and green, typically when they are 6 to 8 inches long. For sponges, you must leave the fruit on the vine until it turns brown, feels lightweight, and the skin begins to pull away from the fiber inside.

Luffa gourds are vigorous vines that reach up to 6 feet in height, so they perform best when planted in the ground with a sturdy trellis or fence for support. While container gardening is possible, you would need a very large pot and a strong support structure to accommodate the plant's size and weight.

Luffa gourds require a long, warm growing season of about 90 days to reach maturity. If you live in a cooler climate, start your seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before your last frost date to give them a head start, and transplant them outside only after the soil has warmed significantly.

Each plant requires about 2 feet of spacing. Because they are vining plants, ensure you have vertical space or a trellis system ready, as they will quickly climb and spread to find sunlight.

Once the fruit is fully mature and dry, peel away the outer skin to reveal the fibrous interior. Shake out the seeds, rinse the sponge thoroughly in water, and let it air dry completely in the sun before using it for cleaning.
