Cardinal Flower Aquatic Pond Plant

Marginal plants are designed to grow in shallow water, typically along the edges or shelves of a pond. This Cardinal Flower thrives when its roots are submerged in a few inches of water or kept in consistently saturated soil, mimicking a bog environment.

You can do either. The plant arrives in a 4-inch pot, which can be placed directly onto a pond shelf. If you prefer a more natural look, you can remove it from the pot and plant it into a specialized aquatic basket with aquatic soil or directly into the boggy substrate of your pond edge.

Cardinal flowers are generally hardy perennials, but their winter survival depends on your specific climate zone and how deep your pond is. In colder regions, you may need to move the plant to a deeper part of the pond where the water doesn't freeze solid, or bring it indoors for the winter.

The Cardinal Flower's tubular, bright red blooms are naturally attractive to hummingbirds. To maximize your chances, place the plant in a sunny or partially shaded spot near the edge of your pond where hummingbirds have a clear, unobstructed flight path to access the flowers.

While Cardinal Flowers are relatively self-sufficient, they benefit from occasional feeding during the active growing season. Use a fertilizer specifically formulated for aquatic plants, such as an aquatic plant tablet, pushed into the soil near the roots once or twice during the summer.
