In hotter, drier climates, you can close them slightly to retain humidity, while in cooler or wetter regions, opening them wider helps improve airflow and prevent the compost from becoming too dense or anaerobic.

It is best placed on a flat, level surface like a patio, deck, or a dedicated patch of dirt. Because it has integrated drainage slots, you should avoid placing it directly on a surface that could be damaged by compost tea, such as a wooden deck that isn't sealed.

The barrel is designed to rotate smoothly even when loaded, thanks to its balanced construction. While it will naturally feel heavier as it fills up, the rotating mechanism is geared to make the turning motion manageable for most adults.
