Newbaum's cloth tape is thinner than modern synthetic gel tapes, so it offers less vibration dampening. If you prefer a plush feel, you can wrap it over an existing layer of cork tape or add a gel strip underneath for extra comfort.

Cotton tape is actually quite forgiving to install because it has no stretch, which prevents it from snapping during the wrapping process. It conforms well to curves, though you should take care to maintain consistent tension to ensure a clean, overlapping finish.

Unlike some synthetic tapes that can become slippery when wet, cotton cloth provides a reliable, tactile surface even in damp conditions. However, because it is a natural fiber, it will absorb moisture, so it may take longer to dry out after a rainy ride.

You don't have to, but many riders choose to apply shellac or a similar sealant to protect the cotton from dirt, sweat, and moisture. This also gives the tape a slightly glossy, vintage look and makes it much easier to wipe clean.

Newbaum's cloth tape relies on the friction of the wrap itself rather than an adhesive backing. As long as you maintain consistent tension and finish the ends securely with electrical tape or twine, it will remain firmly in place.
