An 8-foot leash is generally ideal for mid-length surfboards or funboards in the 7-foot to 8-foot range. As a rule of thumb, your leash should be roughly the same length as your board to ensure you have enough space to fall away from the board without it snapping back at you.

Straight leashes are designed to stay behind you in the water, which minimizes drag and keeps the cord from tangling around your legs while you are paddling or riding. Coiled leashes are typically reserved for stand-up paddleboarding to keep the cord on the deck of the board, whereas this straight design is optimized for traditional surfing.

This leash is specifically engineered for mid-range conditions. While it is built with durable materials for reliability, it is not intended for heavy, overhead waves where a thicker, high-performance big wave leash would be necessary to prevent snapping.

You should inspect your leash before every session for signs of wear, such as cracks in the urethane, fraying at the swivel, or a worn-out velcro strap. Even with careful maintenance, it is standard practice to replace your leash every year or two, or immediately if you notice any structural weakness.
