Heirloom Roses Fourth of July Climbing Rose

An own-root rose is grown from a cutting of the parent plant rather than being grafted onto a different rootstock. This typically results in a hardier plant that stays true to its variety and can often recover better if it suffers winter damage.

While climbing roses generally prefer the ground to support their extensive root systems, you can grow this in a very large, deep container if you provide a sturdy trellis for support. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage and be prepared to water it more frequently than a ground-planted rose.

As a climbing rose, it will need a vertical structure like a trellis, arbor, or fence to reach its full potential. Plan for a footprint of at least 3 to 4 feet wide at the base to allow for proper airflow and root development.

This variety is a repeat bloomer, meaning it will produce flowers throughout the season without much intervention. However, regular deadheading—removing spent blooms—will encourage the plant to direct its energy into producing new flowers rather than seeds.

The Fourth of July Climbing Rose is hardy in zones 5 through 10. If you are in the colder end of that range, you may want to provide some winter protection for the canes during the first year or two while the plant establishes itself.
