Chick Charms Giants Hens & Chicks

As the name suggests, this variety produces significantly larger rosettes than the common Sempervivum species. While standard varieties often stay compact, these can grow to be several inches across, making them a much more substantial focal point for containers or rock gardens.

While they are technically succulents, they are best suited for outdoor life. They require the intense, direct light of full sun to maintain their vibrant gold and red-orange coloration and compact shape; most indoor environments simply cannot provide enough light to keep them healthy and colorful.

These are highly drought-tolerant plants, so it is best to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In most outdoor settings, they require very little supplemental water once established, making them an excellent low-maintenance choice.

The foliage provides year-round interest, though the intensity of the colors can shift slightly with the seasons and temperature changes. You can expect the most vibrant hues during the active growing season, with the colors often deepening or subtly changing as the plant enters dormancy in the winter.

Excellent drainage is the most critical factor for success. Use a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for cacti and succulents, and ensure your container has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling around the roots, which can lead to rot.
