Burpee Patterson Onion

Patterson onions are specifically bred for exceptional long-term storage. When cured properly and kept in a cool, dry place, they are known to remain firm and fresh well into the winter months, often outlasting many other yellow onion varieties.

While they are designed for direct sowing in the ground, you can grow them in containers if the pot is deep enough to accommodate their root system and provides at least 8 to 12 inches of space per plant. Ensure your container has excellent drainage and receives full sun throughout the day.

This means the onions have a balanced flavor profile. They offer the classic savory depth you expect from a yellow onion, but without the intense, sharp bite that can sometimes overpower raw dishes like salads or salsas.

These are designed for direct sowing. Starting them directly in the garden bed helps the roots establish without the stress of transplanting, which is crucial for bulb development and ensuring they reach their full size of 3.5 to 4 inches.

Patterson onions require full sun, which means at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If they are planted in partial shade, the bulbs will likely be smaller and may not store as effectively.
