While specifically formulated for Phalaenopsis and moth orchids, this mix works well for other epiphytic orchids that require similar drainage and aeration, such as Doritaenopsis and Sederia. It is not recommended for terrestrial orchids that prefer denser, soil-based substrates.

Because this mix offers high drainage and aeration, you may find yourself watering slightly more frequently than with denser, peat-based mixes. Always check the moisture level by feeling the medium before watering, as the chunky structure dries out faster to prevent root rot.

It is not strictly necessary, but lightly dampening the mix before use can help the ingredients settle more evenly around the roots. If you choose to pre-soak, ensure the mix is only slightly moist, not saturated, to avoid stressing the plant.

Coconut husk chips are used because they are more resistant to decomposition than traditional fir bark. This means the mix maintains its structure and airflow for a longer period, resulting in less frequent repotting for your orchids.

Initially, a chunky mix can feel less stable than a fine potting soil. To secure your orchid, ensure you pack the mix firmly around the base of the plant or use orchid clips and stakes until the root system has grown enough to anchor the plant naturally.
