You can do either, but for the best long-term health, we recommend transplanting it into a larger aquatic basket with heavy clay soil or aquatic planting media. If you prefer to keep it in the pot, ensure it is submerged at the correct depth for marginal plants.

Spike Rush is a marginal plant, meaning it thrives best in shallow water. Ideally, the water level should be at or just above the crown of the plant, typically ranging from 0 to 3 inches deep.

While it is a vigorous grower, it is generally manageable in a contained pond environment. If you are concerned about it spreading too quickly, planting it in a dedicated aquatic pot rather than directly into the pond substrate will help keep its root system contained.

Spike Rush is considered deer-resistant, making it a safe choice for outdoor ponds that might be exposed to local wildlife. While no plant is entirely immune to hungry animals, it is rarely the first choice for grazing deer.

Once established, Spike Rush is quite self-sufficient. However, if you notice slow growth or yellowing, you can use a standard aquatic plant fertilizer tablet pushed into the soil during the growing season to give it a boost.
