Marginal plants are designed to grow in shallow water, typically along the edges or 'margins' of a pond. They thrive in water depths ranging from just a few inches up to about six inches, making them perfect for bog gardens or the shallow shelves of a water feature.

This variety is quite resilient and can withstand freezing temperatures during the winter months. In many climates, it will go dormant when the weather turns cold and return with fresh growth once the spring season begins.

Bloody Dock is relatively low-maintenance. If you are planting it in a container, use a standard aquatic planting medium or heavy garden loam. While it doesn't require frequent fertilizing, an aquatic plant tablet inserted into the soil once at the start of the growing season is usually sufficient.

While it can be tucked into rock crevices, it performs best when planted in an aquatic pot or basket. This allows you to control the soil quality and ensures the roots have enough space to establish themselves without being washed away by water movement.

The plant actually prefers a good amount of sunlight to maintain its vibrant coloration. While it can tolerate partial shade, consistent sun exposure helps keep the deep red veins distinct and the green leaves bright.
