Kamawanu Tenugui

CHUSEN is a traditional Japanese hand-dyeing method where dye is poured through a stencil onto stacked layers of fabric. This process allows the pattern to penetrate through to the back of the cloth, creating a design that is visible on both sides rather than just printed on the surface.

This tenugui is made of lightweight, flat-woven cotton, so it is much thinner and faster-drying than a fluffy terry cloth towel. While it is highly absorbent, it feels more like a soft, smooth sheet, making it ideal for travel, kitchen use, or as a headband.

Because these are hand-dyed using traditional methods, you may notice some color runoff during the first few washes. We recommend washing it separately in cold water with a mild detergent to preserve the vibrancy of the cherry blossom pattern.

No, the short ends of a traditional tenugui are left raw and unhemmed. This design choice prevents bulkiness, allows the towel to dry extremely quickly, and makes it easier to tear the fabric if you need to create smaller strips for cleaning or first aid.
