A wide base provides the necessary clearance for your bamboo whisk (chasen) to move in the rapid, zig-zag motion required to aerate the tea. Without this space, you cannot effectively break up clumps or create the signature frothy crema.

While the ceramic material is durable, we recommend hand-washing your chawan with warm water and a soft sponge. Harsh detergents and the high heat of a dishwasher can degrade the finish over time and potentially chip the delicate edges.

While it is specifically engineered for the mechanics of whisking matcha, its shape is versatile enough to serve as a small bowl for other teas or even as a decorative vessel. However, its wide, shallow design is not ideal for retaining heat like a traditional teacup.

Ceramic is excellent at retaining heat, which helps keep your matcha at the ideal drinking temperature. For the best experience, you can warm the bowl by rinsing it with hot water before adding your matcha powder and hot water.
