Diatomaceous earth is a naturally porous, sedimentary rock. When your wet soap sits on the dish, the stone instantly wicks away the moisture, absorbing it into its structure and evaporating it quickly, which prevents the soap from sitting in a puddle.

No, the stone is designed to be safe for countertops. However, because it absorbs water, it is best to place it on a surface that can handle occasional moisture, or simply wipe the area underneath it if you notice any residue from the soap itself.

Over time, soap residue can clog the pores of the stone. You can easily refresh it by lightly sanding the surface with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper, which will open the pores back up and restore its absorbent properties.

While it works perfectly on a bathroom or kitchen sink, it is not recommended for use directly inside a shower where it will be constantly submerged or sprayed with water. It needs airflow to self-dry effectively.

Diatomaceous earth is a rigid, stone-like material, so it can chip or crack if dropped on a hard surface like tile or stone. Treat it with the same care you would a ceramic or glass accessory.
