Harvest the fruit when it is young and tender, roughly 6 to 8 inches long, if you intend to eat it like a zucchini. For sponges, you must leave the fruit on the vine until it turns brown, feels lightweight, and the skin begins to loosen.

Luffa gourds are vigorous climbers that require significant space and a sturdy trellis to support their weight. While possible in very large containers, they perform best when planted directly in the ground with ample room to spread.
