Harvest the fruits when they are young, tender, and about 6 to 8 inches long if you want to eat them like okra. For sponges, you must leave the fruit on the vine until it turns brown, feels light, and the skin begins to dry and loosen.

While they can grow along the ground, a trellis, fence, or sturdy support structure is highly recommended. Growing them vertically keeps the fruit off the soil, which helps prevent rot and ensures the gourds grow straight.

These luffa gourds typically take about 100 days to reach full maturity. Because they require a long, warm growing season, it is best to start them early or plant them in a location that receives consistent full sun.

Once the gourd is fully dried and brown, peel away the outer skin to reveal the fibrous interior. Shake out the seeds, rinse the sponge thoroughly to remove any remaining pulp, and let it air dry completely before use.

Luffa vines are quite vigorous and have extensive root systems, so they generally perform best when planted directly in the ground. If you must use a container, choose a very large pot—at least 5 to 10 gallons—and ensure you have a strong trellis system in place.
