Mulberry trees grown from seed generally take between 5 to 10 years to reach maturity and begin producing fruit. Patience is key, as the tree needs to establish a strong root system and reach a certain size before it shifts energy into fruit production.

While many mulberry seeds can be planted directly, they often benefit from cold stratification to mimic winter conditions and improve germination rates. Placing the seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag in the refrigerator for a few weeks before planting can help break dormancy.

Because mulberry trees can grow up to 60 feet tall, they are best suited for planting directly in the ground where they have ample space for their root systems. While you can start them in containers, you will eventually need to transplant them to a permanent outdoor location to support their mature size.

Given their potential height and wide canopy, you should space mulberry trees at least 20 to 30 feet apart. This ensures adequate airflow and sunlight penetration, which are essential for healthy growth and fruit production.

Most mulberry trees are self-fertile, meaning a single tree is capable of producing fruit without needing a second tree nearby for cross-pollination. However, having multiple trees can sometimes result in a larger overall harvest.
