Logee's American Elderberry Plant

American elderberries are not self-fertile, meaning they require a different variety nearby to cross-pollinate. Planting this set together ensures the genetic diversity necessary for the plants to produce a bountiful harvest of berries.

While they arrive in 4-inch starter pots, these shrubs are designed to reach 5-6 feet at maturity. They will eventually require a very large container or, ideally, to be transplanted directly into the ground to thrive and produce fruit.

These plants are quite hardy and are rated for zones 3 through 8. This means they can withstand cold winters in northern regions while still performing well in more temperate climates.

For the best fruit production, these elderberries require full sun. While they are tolerant of less fertile soil, they will struggle to yield a significant harvest if planted in partial or full shade.

Elderberries are fast-growing, but they typically need one to two full growing seasons to establish their root systems before producing a significant crop. You can expect to see the first flower clusters in the spring and summer following establishment.
