DIRECT GARDENING Onion Sets

Onion sets are typically planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. They prefer cool weather to establish their root systems before the heat of summer encourages bulb development.

To give each bulb enough room to mature, plant them about 4 inches apart in rows spaced 12 inches apart. You will need approximately 25 to 30 square feet of garden space to accommodate the full set of 80 bulbs.

These white onions are specifically prized for their tender texture and mild flavor, making them excellent for raw applications like salsas, salads, and chutneys. While they can be cooked, their delicate nature shines brightest when used fresh.

No special preparation is required. Simply plant the sets directly into well-draining, fertile soil with the pointed end facing up, burying them about an inch deep.

Most onion sets reach maturity within 90 to 120 days after planting. You will know they are ready to harvest when the green tops begin to yellow and fall over naturally.
