While these gourds are large and typically thrive in open ground, they can be grown in very large containers if you provide a sturdy trellis for support. However, for the best results and maximum fruit size, planting directly in the garden soil is recommended.

Because bushel gourds are vigorous growers, you should space them at least 5 to 6 feet apart. This allows the vines enough room to spread and ensures adequate airflow to prevent fungal issues.

Once harvested, the gourds need to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for several months until they feel light and the seeds rattle inside. After curing, you can scrub the outer skin clean, sand the surface, and paint or carve them as desired.

Starting them indoors 3 to 4 weeks before your last frost date can give you a head start, especially in cooler climates. However, be careful when transplanting, as gourd roots are sensitive to disturbance; using biodegradable pots can help minimize stress.

The gourds are ready when the vine begins to wither and turn brown, and the stem connecting the fruit to the vine becomes dry and brittle. The shell should feel hard and firm to the touch, indicating it has fully matured.
