Shires Hanging Cheek Waterford Bit

The Waterford mouthpiece is designed with multiple links to prevent a horse from leaning on the bit or taking hold. Because it is flexible and conforms to the horse's mouth, it makes it difficult for the horse to grab the bit and pull against the rider.

The hanging cheek, or baucher, design applies subtle poll pressure when the reins are engaged. This encourages the horse to flex at the poll and maintain a consistent, responsive contact without the leverage of a curb bit.

While the Waterford is effective for control, it is generally considered a mild bit because it lacks a solid bar that can press against the tongue. However, because it is highly mobile, it is best suited for horses that are already accustomed to a bit and have a steady contact.

Stainless steel is an ideal material for bits because it is durable, rust-resistant, and easy to clean. It is also tasteless, which helps many horses accept the bit more readily than those made of other metals.

An 18mm mouthpiece is a standard thickness that fits most horses comfortably. If your horse has a very small mouth or a low palate, you might prefer a thinner bit, but for the majority of horses, this size provides a good balance of pressure distribution and comfort.
