The 18-tooth engagement is the standard for DT Swiss hubs, offering a balance of extreme durability and reliable power transfer. While higher tooth counts provide faster engagement, the 18-tooth version is often preferred for its robust tooth profile, which can handle higher torque loads and requires less frequent maintenance.

You will need a specific DT Swiss ring nut tool to remove the threaded ring inside the hub shell. Beyond that, the ratchets and springs are designed to be installed by hand without specialized tools, making it a straightforward process for home mechanics.

You must use the included DT Swiss specialized grease. It is formulated specifically for the Star Ratchet system to ensure the ratchets slide freely without gumming up, which could cause engagement issues or premature wear if you use standard, thicker bearing grease.

For most riders, a thorough cleaning and re-greasing once or twice a year is sufficient. If you frequently ride in wet, muddy, or dusty conditions, you should inspect and service the hub more often to prevent debris from compromising the engagement teeth.
