The nickel plating is durable and designed for regular use, but like any metal finish, it may show signs of wear after years of heavy friction or exposure to harsh elements. The Thunderer is designed to be responsive, meaning it doesn't require excessive lung capacity to produce a sharp, clear sound. A moderate, controlled breath is usually sufficient to get a crisp, authoritative tone.

While it is primarily designed for sports officiating, the high-pitch sound is effective for signaling in outdoor environments. Keep in mind that because it is a pea whistle, the ball can occasionally freeze or stick if it becomes waterlogged or extremely cold, so it may not be the best choice for extreme winter conditions.

To keep it hygienic, you can rinse the whistle with warm water and a mild soap, then shake it out thoroughly to ensure the pea doesn't stick. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers, as these can damage the nickel plating.
