Steel is significantly harder and more resistant to abrasion than aluminum. If you are climbing or canyoneering in environments with high amounts of sand, grit, or debris, steel will last much longer before showing signs of wear.

While it is technically capable of handling climbing loads, its weight makes it less ideal for standard sport or trad climbing where every gram counts. It is specifically engineered for high-stress, abrasive environments like slot canyons or industrial rigging.

At 215 grams, this steel carabiner is substantially heavier than typical aluminum climbing carabiners, which usually weigh between 40 and 70 grams. You should only carry this if the durability benefits outweigh the extra weight penalty for your specific activity.

Because this carabiner is designed for gritty environments, sand and dirt can eventually accumulate in the threads. Periodically rinse the gate mechanism with fresh water and ensure it spins freely to maintain smooth operation.

The 40 kN rating indicates the carabiner can withstand significantly higher forces than standard climbing carabiners, which are typically rated around 22–24 kN. This provides an extra margin of safety for heavy-duty applications or high-load scenarios.
