A 10cm length is standard for sport climbing. It keeps the rope close to the wall to minimize drag on straightforward routes, though you might want to carry a few longer draws if your project has significant zig-zags or traverses.

Wire gates are generally superior in cold or icy conditions because they are less prone to freezing shut. They also have a lower gate mass, which reduces the chance of 'gate flutter'—where the gate opens unintentionally during a fall.
