Imlay Canyon Gear SandTrap

The SandTrap functions by creating a deadman anchor. When filled with sand and buried or placed in a secure position, the friction and weight of the sand provide the necessary resistance to support a rappel, provided it is set up correctly in a suitable location.

It is specifically designed for canyons where sand is readily available. It will not function effectively in canyons composed primarily of solid rock, mud, or loose scree where you cannot easily fill the device or create a stable anchor point.

Retrieval is straightforward if you have properly rigged the pull line. Once you are at the bottom of the drop, you pull the retrieval line to dump the sand, which collapses the anchor and allows you to pull the device down to your location.

Yes. Because this is a specialized piece of technical gear that relies on proper placement and rigging, you should receive hands-on instruction from an experienced canyoneer before using it in the field. It is not a beginner-friendly device.

The SandTrap weighs 520 grams. It is designed to fold compactly into its own storage bag, making it easy to carry in your pack until you reach the section of the canyon where you need to build an anchor.
