The notch is designed for small-gauge garden wire or twine. While it is made of hardened steel, using it on thick or high-tensile fencing wire can damage the blade edge and compromise your precision for plant pruning.

As a bypass pruner, it is best suited for live, green wood up to approximately 1 inch in diameter. For dead, dry wood or branches thicker than that, you would be better served by a pair of loppers to avoid damaging the blade.
