The device uses a butane cartridge to heat a small metal grill, which then warms a repellent-infused mat. This process releases a scent-free, DEET-free vapor that creates a 15-foot zone of protection, effectively keeping mosquitoes away without the need for topical lotions or sprays.

While the device is portable and includes a belt clip, it is most effective when used in a stationary position, such as sitting at a campsite or on a patio. Because the repellent creates a vapor zone, moving quickly through the air can disperse the protection, making it less effective while you are actively hiking.

The repellent mats are designed to change color as they are used. When the blue mat fades to white, it indicates that the active ingredient has been depleted and it is time to insert a fresh mat.

The repellent is designed for outdoor use in open-air environments. While it is generally safe for use around people, you should avoid using it in enclosed spaces and keep it away from direct contact with food or pets to ensure proper ventilation.

Both models provide the same core 15-foot protection zone and use the same repellent technology. The MR450 is designed with a more rugged, rubber-armored exterior and includes an integrated ZoneCheck indicator light, making it slightly more durable for demanding outdoor environments.
