The ratchet mechanism works in stages, allowing you to cut through thicker branches in several smaller steps rather than one continuous squeeze. This provides a significant mechanical advantage, making it much easier to prune tough, woody stems without straining your hand.

The lower handle rotates as you squeeze, which allows your fingers to move naturally with the tool rather than rubbing against a fixed handle. This design significantly reduces friction and helps prevent blisters and forearm fatigue during long pruning sessions.

These are anvil-style pruners, which are specifically designed for cutting dead, dry, or woody stems. Because they crush the stem against a flat surface to make the cut, they are generally not recommended for live, green stems where a clean, bypass-style cut is preferred to promote healthy healing.

These pruners are rated for a maximum cutting diameter of 20mm, or approximately 3/4 of an inch. Attempting to cut branches thicker than this may damage the blade or the ratchet mechanism.

The blades are made from high-carbon steel, which is durable and holds a sharp edge well, but it can be prone to rust if left wet. They feature a PTFE coating to help resist rust and ensure smooth cutting, but we recommend wiping them clean and dry after every use to maintain their longevity.

Spear & Jackson offers a 10-year guarantee on this tool, which covers manufacturing defects and material failures under normal use. It does not cover normal wear and tear, such as the blades dulling over time or damage caused by misuse, like cutting branches thicker than the recommended 20mm.
