Blue Agave americana

Bare root shipping means the plant is removed from its pot and the roots are carefully rinsed free of all soil or growing media. This reduces weight and prevents mess during transit, but it means you should be prepared to pot the agave in a well-draining succulent mix as soon as it arrives.

While these agaves are grown outdoors in Pennsylvania during the warmer months, they are not frost-hardy. They must be protected indoors or in a greenhouse during winter, making them ideal for container gardening in colder climates.

Because these are living plants pulled directly from mother pots, each specimen will have its own unique size and character. You can expect a healthy, established plant, but it will not be identical to the specific dimensions of any other plant in the batch.

Once your plant arrives, pot it in a high-quality, fast-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Place it in a spot with bright, indirect light for a few days to let the roots settle before gradually moving it into full sun.

You can plant them in the ground during the summer if you live in a warm climate, but they will need to be dug up and moved indoors before the first frost. For most gardeners, keeping them in large containers is the most practical way to enjoy them year-round.
