Terracotta is naturally porous, allowing water to slowly seep through the walls of the spike and directly into the soil. As the soil dries out, it pulls moisture from the reservoir, ensuring your plant receives water only when it needs it.

It is best suited for indoor plants that prefer consistent moisture, such as ferns or peace lilies. Plants that require the soil to dry out completely between waterings, like succulents or cacti, may not be the best candidates for a self-watering system.

Since the cat design is open at the top, you can easily check the water level at a glance. We recommend checking it every few days until you determine how quickly your specific plant consumes water.

The spike measures 5.5 inches long and 2 inches at its widest point. It is designed for standard indoor pots, but ensure your pot has enough soil depth to support the weight of the spike and the water inside without tipping over.

To prevent mineral buildup or algae, rinse the spike with warm water and a soft brush every few weeks. Avoid using harsh soaps, as the porous terracotta can absorb chemicals that might be harmful to your plant.
