Vintage Matcha Bowl

Hagi-yaki is a traditional Japanese ceramic style from Yamaguchi Prefecture known for its soft, earthy texture and heat-retaining properties. It is highly prized in tea ceremonies because the clay is porous and the glaze is designed to evolve, making it an ideal vessel for whisking and enjoying matcha.

Nanabake, or 'seven transformations,' refers to the way Hagi-yaki pottery changes appearance over time. As you use the bowl, tea tannins seep into the fine cracks in the glaze, gradually altering the color and character of the piece, which is considered a desirable trait that adds history and depth to the bowl.

This bowl is in excellent vintage condition and is fully functional for daily matcha preparation. While it is a beautiful collector's piece, it is designed to be used, and its aesthetic will actually improve with regular handling and tea preparation.

Because Hagi-yaki is porous, avoid soaking it in water or using harsh detergents, which can absorb into the clay. Simply rinse the bowl with warm water immediately after use and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent staining or mold.

Dojimari-gata is a specific bowl shape characterized by a slightly constricted or 'pinched' rim. This design is practical for matcha preparation as it helps contain the tea while whisking and provides a comfortable, secure grip when holding the bowl with both hands.
