Vintage Matcha Bowl

Raku-yaki is a traditional 16th-century Japanese firing method where the piece is removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. This rapid cooling process creates the unique, porous texture and organic, slightly irregular shapes that are highly prized in the tea ceremony.

The porous nature of Raku clay is intentional; it provides excellent heat retention, keeping your matcha warm for longer. Because the material is porous, it is best to rinse it with warm water and dry it thoroughly after each use to prevent moisture buildup.

While traditional Raku ware often utilizes lead-based glazes for their specific aesthetic qualities, this bowl is intended primarily for ceremonial use. If you plan to use it for daily consumption, we recommend treating it as a decorative piece or ensuring it is used strictly for matcha preparation rather than acidic beverages.

This chawan is in excellent vintage condition, meaning it has been well-preserved over time. As a hand-formed, low-fired ceramic, it will naturally show slight variations in glaze and form, which are considered hallmarks of its authenticity rather than defects.

This bowl comes with its original kiribako, or wooden paulownia box, which is the traditional and ideal way to store it. Paulownia wood is naturally moisture-resistant and insect-repellent, making it perfect for protecting delicate ceramics from dust and humidity.
